On the heels of my Cabo trip last year, I was eager to get back to my favorite getaway spot. So when I got the chance to visit Barcelo Maya Beach Resort in Riviera Maya, I had but one word: “Si!”
Between the Ek Balam jaunt and the cave swimming adventure, it felt like we’d jam-packed enough into one day for a whole trip—but the fun wasn’t over yet. Back at Barcelo Maya Beach Resort, they were about to engage in a beloved annual tradition: releasing baby sea turtles into the ocean. I’d missed the release on my last trip to Barcelo’s Cabo San Lucas property, and this time, I was determined to see this adorable event take place!
After a few hours at Ek Balam, it was time to hop in the van for the journey to Cenote Maya. Throughout the week, I’d seen signs around Barcelo Maya Beach Resort for its own natural “cenote” and had grown increasingly curious about what exactly this term meant. As Alltournatives’ Rodrigo patiently explained, cenotes are basically underground swimming holes indigenous to Mexico; the lore has it that they were used as sacrificial sites by the Mayans. I was eager to see for myself: would we be swimming in a sea of stalagmites and stalactites? Would we survive to tell the tale?
